Sacred Sewing & Baking Biblically

Saturday, February 11, 2023 20 Sh'vat 5783

6:45 PM - 8:15 PMKol Ami Synagogue
Saturday evening, join us for Havdalah at 6:45 pm followed by a presentation on “The Making of a Torah” with Rabbi Linda. Then, you can choose to attend Sacred Sewing, sponsored by the Women of Kol Ami, and sew actual Torah panels together with Rabbi Linda. Or join Rabbi Jonathan to learn how to make the best bagels in the west, sponsored by the Men of Kol Ami, as you also learn about responsibly and sustainable eating. Anyone, regardless of gender identity, is welcome to participate in either activity.

In the Mishna, Pirkei Avot 3:17, we learn that without bread (literally “flour”), there is no Torah; without Torah there is no bread. Interested in learning more but can’t make this event? Join Rabbis Linda and Jonathan at one of the other activities during our scholar-in-residence weekend.
  • Friday afternoon, jumpstart your Shabbat at 1pm for Baking: Shabbat, Tzedakah, & You
  • Rabbis Linda and Jonathan will be at Friday night services introducing the weekend.
  • Saturday morning, Rabbi Jonathan will deliver a d’var Torah on the week’s portion, Yitro.
  • Following Shabbat morning services, join us for a kiddush lunch and discussion on Creating Worlds with Words.
  • On Sunday morning the Rabbis will engage our religious school students in learning how a Torah scroll is made, proofreading panels of the Torah, and making bagels! The Sunday morning opportunities are only open to current Religious School students. If you are interested in the Kol Ami Religious School, contact Rina at educationdir@katucson.org.

This weekend would not be possible without the generous support of the Mitch Dorson Scholar-in-Residence fund under the leadership of Jim Whitehill.
