Baking: Shabbat, Tzedakah, & You

Friday, February 10, 2023 19 Sh'vat 5783

1:00 PM - 5:00 PMSy Juster Auditorium
Join Rabbi Jonathan to bake challah for the weekend’s onegs, for tzedakah, and for yourselves. We will mix the dough at 1:30 pm, braid the challot at 3:00 pm, and be finished baking by 5:00 pm. Participants have the option joining at 1:30 pm or 3:00 pm. If you want to leave after the dough mixing is over, you can take some home to bake! You will learn a variety of braiding and shaping techniques and explore the deep meaning of the mitzvah of hafrashat challah (separating the challah offering), making challah for home and rolls for the Community Food Bank and for the weekend onegs.
Registration is requested.

In the Mishna, Pirkei Avot 3:17, we learn that without bread (literally “flour”), there is no Torah; without Torah there is no bread. Interested in learning more but can’t make this event? Join Rabbis Linda and Jonathan at one of the other activities during our scholar-in-residence weekend.
  • Rabbis Linda and Jonathan will be at Friday night services introducing the weekend.
  • Saturday morning, Rabbi Jonathan will deliver a d’var Torah on the week’s portion, Yitro.
  • Following Shabbat morning services, join us for a kiddush lunch and discussion on Creating Worlds with Words.
  • Welcome the new week with Havdalah followed by breakout sessions on Sacred Sewing & Baking Biblically.
  • On Sunday morning the Rabbis will engage our religious school students in learning how a Torah scroll is made, proofreading panels of the Torah, and making bagels! The Sunday morning opportunities are only open to current Religious School students. If you are interested in the Kol Ami Religious School, contact Rina at educationdir@katucson.org.

This weekend would not be possible without the generous support of the Mitch Dorson Scholar-in-Residence fund under the leadership of Jim Whitehill.

Sorry, Registration has ended.
