Wednesdays at 7:00 pmLearn reading and comprehension Taught by Marjorie Hochberg, Cantorial Soloist Emerita, this course will delve into the geography of important prayers such as the Sh’ma, Amida and Torah and Haftarah Blessings.
Did you know that the Hebrew root of the word siddur, prayer book, is the same as the root for seder, the Passover table service? Both mean “order,” because both are thoughtfully ordered.
If you’ve ever felt like the order of the service, the meaning of prayers, and the choreography of Jewish worship is a mystery, Geography of the Prayerbook is for you. Part history, part translation, and part interpretation, this class helps anyone who is looking for a way to navigate Reform Jewish services.
Hebrew reading is not required but is helpful. If you are a person who may not read Hebrew and don’t have the time to learn Hebrew skills but want to have a deeper understanding of the prayers, this course is for you as well. All are welcome, especially if you don’t feel “Jewish enough.”
Instructor: Marjorie HochbergMarjorie is the Cantorial Soloist Emerita at Kol Ami and was the Cantorial Soloist at Temple Emanu-El/Kol Ami for over 30 years. She also prepared many B’nai Mitzvah students and continues to teach a variety of Adult Education classes on Hebrew language and Judaics.

Classes will be held at Kol Ami right after Shabbat morning services, from approximately 12:30 – 1:15 pm.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to chant sacred texts like the Torah (on Shabbat/weekdays or High Holy Days), Haftarah, or Megilat Esther for Purim? Now’s your chance! Join Cantor Jen’s engaging cantillation class and become a proud member of our Yad Squad!
This 10-session course will teach you to chant our sacred texts using the beautiful trope symbols that bring them to life.
To get the most out of this experience, it’s helpful to have a basic understanding of Hebrew letters and reading.
The class kicks off with learning Shabbat/weekday Torah and Haftarah trope, as well as the special melody for chanting the Song of the Sea. After that, we will move on to learning High Holy Days Torah trope and (time permitting) Megilat Esther trope.
We can't wait for you to join us in learning this important and empowering tradition of our Jewish heritage. As the old saying goes, "Give a Jew a recording, they'll chant for a day; teach a Jew to chant, and they'll chant for a lifetime...be that Jew!"
