Sept Bulletin

Rabbi Cohen’s Message

Where Are You?

Several decades ago, I had my bar mitzvah, my coming-of-age ritual, in a northwest London synagogue. I will never forget that day, not just for the traditional elements but also for some more of the quirky ones:

  • The banquet hall, where I had my celebration lunch, was condemned to be demolished a few weeks later.

  • At that celebration lunch, I was still so self-centered at that age that I thought the enormous, elaborate potted plant my parents brought out was for me instead of my grandmother!

  • I distinctly remember looking out at the congregation as I led prayers and seeing one of my friends trying to place a skullcap on his head. He had spiky hair, and the skullcap kept falling off, and I wanted to laugh, but I had to concentrate.

Aside from all those strange memories, it was hard to forget the section from the Hebrew Bible that I chanted. Namely, the story of Adam and Eve being tempted by the serpent in the garden of Eden. For me, the most dramatic part of the story is when God, knowing full well what Adam has done, asks Adam, “Where are you?” in Hebrew, ayeka? In its simplest form, this word is an inquiry about location, but the Jewish sages took things further.

This question, “Where are you?” as we get closer to the Jewish New Year and the high holidays, a time of deep introspection, is taken to mean where are you in the sense of, “Where is your essence? Is there a way that you can get back to the ideal version of yourself? What part of your essential soul have you lost in the past year that you would like to regain and refocus on?”

If we translate these high-level questions into more practical terms, we might ask, “If we had more hours in the day. How would we spend our time? If there was wisdom we had accumulated in previous years that should have guided us. Still, we had forgotten that. What was that wisdom? Are there people in our lives who make us feel whole again when we connect or reconnect with them? Are there moments or episodes during the past year where we didn’t live up to our ideals, and is there a way we can fix that?”

I’ll never forget my bar mitzvah for different reasons, but more recently, I realized that the beginning of our holy book contains within it this beautiful question that we should always ask ourselves at this time of year, and with the question that the Source Of All Life asked the first humans in paradise, namely, “Ayeka, where are you?”
