What Is Purim?
Purim is one of the most joyful and spirited holidays on the Jewish calendar. Celebrated each spring, Purim commemorates the story told in Megillat Esther (the Book of Esther), in which Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai courageously save the Jewish people of ancient Persia from Haman’s plot to destroy them.
Purim is a celebration of resilience, hidden miracles, courage, and communal joy. It reminds us that even when the Divine presence feels hidden, redemption and hope are always possible.
Costumes, Carnival & Celebration
It is customary to dress in costume on Purim, highlighting the theme of hidden identities throughout the story. From Queen Esther concealing her Jewish identity to the dramatic reversals of fate, Purim reminds us that things are not always as they seem.
Communities celebrate with playful spiels (humorous retellings of the story), lively music, festive meals, sweet treats like hamantaschen, and a spirit of over-the-top joy. Booing Haman, cheering for Esther and Mordechai, and singing together are all part of the fun.
Purim is a holiday where we lean fully into celebration, community, and laughter.
